TRAILS MONTE ZUGNA
A mountain with a unique natural environment.
The new mountain biking frontier of Alto Garda!
Zugna (1865m) is a mountain with a unique natural environment to be classified as natural site for conservation.
The side facing the river Adige offers different possibilities to be explored by the omonimous refuge, stannding on 1616 m of altitude down to the bottom of the valley at around 200 m. Despite its rocky structure we find a lot of trails that are easy to bike, with acceptable slopes where different tecnics can be used.
The fact that is was a battlefield during the First World War has left a legacy in addition to the ruins, a whole network of mule roads that can now be used in MTB, unifying different segments and deciding which type of tour you want to do.
Monte Zugna…the new mountain biking frontier of Alto Garda!
The name is due to a huge crater left by an explosion during the First World War.
The trailhead requires you to push the MTB along almost an imaginary trail, then let yourself slip in a steep serpentine that will test your control of the bike, and then immerge into an exciting superflow trail for a couple of km…speed and smoothness that will remind you of skiing on fresh snow.
You go uphill to the entrance of the second trait called Curva Stell, more technical than the previous one, with a rocky bottom and several sharp turns ahead. Here the enthusiast enduro riders can go crazy! After the intersection with a forest trail called Canada….fast, broad and with many curves to be taken in full, we can rest at its exit on a grassy slope with a plentiful flow of water source.
From here we have 2 alternatives: we can go uphill until Albaredo biking for around 10 minutes and then fastly take Cengio or go downhill 200 m along the forest road and re-enter on the trail to the right up to the intersection with trail Roberto, which is flowing fast but more straight and with some passages that require enduro technics.
We have arrived almost at the end. At Santa Barbara we find a small detour with a single and very narrow and curvy trail…from here we can see the dome of the Monument from the WW1, located in Castel Dante, which is the final arriving point of our tour.
Located about 1,000 meters above sea level along the road leading up to the summit of Mount Zugna, Malga Tof provides a convenient point of access to one of the most popular hiking trails and fun in the area.
It is better to start a couple of kilometers ahead: a nice trail wide and fast with excellent visibility and many bends that take us back to Malga Tof already warm and ready to continue the descent. Got to the curve below the refuge we plunged in trail by jumping literally in the street.
Narrow turns, a fast toboggan, some small jump and then get out of the valley and creep into a single trail fast till the intersection with the first forest road. We head north and get on the pace by taking it back to our left, a single trail with more technical sections of rock and pretty fast straight with good visibility, until you meet another forest road to climb briefly.
We expect the final stretch with 3 variations you can take from the same point. On the left we follow the official trail that after a couple of steep sections of rock falls, turning right into a narrow chute with many debris carried by the rain and some large step. The slope decreases until the intersection with the paved road “degli artiglieri”. The second variant branches off a little below the official trail. To the right, after having left behind them a chicane, take a single trail with beautiful technical passages to go in agility until its release on the asphalt.
This variant can also be reached by turning right immediately after leaving the forest path and a short path that leads us up and down the trail Teo, all nice smooth and drivable.
